Two halls can look identical in photographs and behave completely differently on the day. The difference is almost never the room — it is the power, the access and the small print.
Power, and who pays for it
Ask whether the generator is included, what capacity it is, and who buys diesel. Then ask what happens if it fails. A hall that cannot answer that question clearly is telling you something. Your band, your lighting, your cooling and your caterer's warmers all sit on that one answer.
Kitchen access, or the lack of it
Many event centres have no working kitchen at all, which means your caterer is cooking off-site and finishing on-site. That is entirely normal — but it changes the menu that is sensible, and it changes the timing. Find out before you choose the food, not after.
Load-in and load-out times
Décor takes hours, not minutes. If suppliers can only get in three hours before guests arrive, you cannot have an elaborate installation, no matter what you have paid for. And if everything must be out the same night, budget for the extra hands — someone has to do it while you are celebrating.
- What time can décor begin?
- Is there a separate supplier entrance, or does everything come through the front?
- Is there a lift, or are two hundred chairs going up a staircase?

Parking is a guest experience issue
It is the first thing your guests experience and the last. A beautiful hall with nowhere to park starts every arrival with irritation, and pushes your programme late as people trickle in.
Read the cancellation and postponement terms
Not because you expect to cancel, but because those clauses tell you how the venue behaves under pressure. A fair postponement clause is the sign of a business that expects to keep working with you.
Visit at the same time of day
A hall at ten in the morning is a different room from that hall at seven in the evening. If your event is at night, see it at night — the lighting, the noise from outside and the atmosphere all change.
