Aso-ebi is the part of the party most likely to damage a friendship. Not because of the fabric, but because of the money, the timing and the assumptions nobody said out loud. Handled properly it is the thing that makes the photographs.
Choose a colour family, not a colour
One exact shade across two hundred people is a fantasy — dye lots differ, and lace and Ankara take colour differently. A family of two or three tones that sit together reads as intentional and photographs richer than a single flat colour ever does.
Match the fabric to the season, honestly
Heavy beaded lace at a midday outdoor ceremony in March will be worn for one hour and carried for the rest. Match the weight to the venue and the time. Guests who are comfortable stay, dance and appear in your photographs.
Set one price and never move it
The single biggest cause of aso-ebi conflict is a price that changed, or that different people were told differently. Pick your price, write it once in the group, and hold it. If you want to help someone, help them privately — do not quietly discount and let it be discovered.
- Say clearly whether the price includes the gele or the fila.
- Say whether it includes tailoring. Most disputes start here.
- Say the closing date for payment in the same message as the price.
Close collections earlier than feels comfortable
Six weeks before the event. It will feel early. It is not. Your tailors are sewing for other parties in those same weeks, and the person who pays at three weeks is the person who will call you crying at one.
Order above your count
Always order a little more fabric than the number who paid. People join late, someone's yardage is short, a cut goes wrong. Spare fabric from the same dye lot is cheap insurance; matching a colour after the fact is nearly impossible.
Buying wholesale
Past roughly ten to fifteen outfits, you are in wholesale territory and should be paying wholesale. If you are being charged retail for a group order, you are subsidising someone. Ask directly what the reseller price is at your quantity.
