A hall can look breathtaking in person and flat in every photograph. Usually the difference is not the flowers or the fabric — it is the light, the height, and what happens to be behind the people you love.
Light decides everything else
Nigerian halls are frequently lit with cold, flat overhead fluorescents that turn skin grey and make gold look like plastic. Warm uplighting around the walls costs less than most people expect and changes every photograph taken in that room. If you fix one thing, fix this.
Build height, or the room reads empty
A room of round tables at the same level looks bare from the door and worse from a camera at head height. Tall centrepieces on alternating tables give the eye something to travel up, and give your photographer a foreground. You do not need them on every table — alternating is enough and costs less.
Backdrop: think about what is behind the shoulders
Most backdrops are designed to be looked at head-on. In reality, ninety per cent of your photographs are taken at an angle, with guests standing in front of it. Check it from the side before you sign it off. A backdrop that is beautiful straight on and confusing at forty-five degrees will disappoint you in the album.
- Avoid busy patterns directly behind the high table — they compete with faces.
- Leave dark space around the couple; it makes them the subject.
- Anything reflective will catch the flash. Test it with a phone before the day.
The aisle is a corridor, not a decoration
It has to carry a bride in a heavy dress, a train, and two people helping her. Décor that narrows it below about a metre and a half looks generous in a drawing and becomes an obstacle in real life.
The pillar problem
Almost every affordable hall in Ibadan and Lagos has pillars. Do not fight them — plan the seating around them so no table has its view blocked, and dress them so they read as intentional. A wrapped, lit pillar looks like a design choice. An ignored one looks like a hall you settled for.
What to spend last
Chair covers. They matter far less than lighting or height, and they are the easiest thing to add late if the budget allows. Spend on the room first.
