Where to Spend and Where to Save on a Nigerian Party Budget

Every budget is a series of trades. The trick is knowing which ones your guests will feel and which ones only exist on the spreadsheet. After enough events, the pattern is consistent.

Spend: the food, and the way it is served

This is what people remember and what they talk about afterwards. Not the most expensive menu — the well-executed one, served hot, without a queue. A modest menu served beautifully beats an ambitious one served badly, every single time.

Spend: lighting

The cheapest transformation available to you. It changes every photograph, it changes how the room feels after dark, and it costs a fraction of florals. Most people discover this after their event, looking at the pictures.

Spend: enough staff

The difference between a party that flows and one that stalls. It is also the least visible line on your budget, which is exactly why it gets cut first and regretted most.

Save: chair covers and excess linen

Guests do not notice covers the way planners assume. If the room is well lit and the tables have height, plain good-quality seating disappears into the whole. This is the easiest saving on most budgets.

Save: an over-long programme

Every extra hour costs you across catering, drinks, staff, venue and power — and it rarely improves the party. Tight programmes are remembered as energetic; long ones are remembered as long.

  • Four to five hours is usually the sweet spot for a reception.
  • The band matters more than the length.
  • People leave on a high or they leave tired. You choose which.

Save: souvenirs nobody wanted

Fewer, better items given to the guests who stayed will be appreciated more than a large volume of things left on tables at the end of the night. Walk any hall after an event and you will see the evidence.

The one thing never to save on

Contingency. Keep something back. Something always moves on the day — a supplier is late, the guest count grows, the generator needs diesel. A budget with no slack turns a small problem into a decision you make while stressed.
